Determinants of Physical Activities in Settings
Description of Action
The COST Action “Determinants of Physical ActivitieS in Settings” (DE-PASS) is unique in focus, extent, constitution and as an effective Knowledge Transfer Platform (KTP).
DE-PASS will focus on identifying, understanding and measuring the determinants which promote, maintain or inhibit Physical Activity Behaviours (PABs) across the lifespan and in different settings and translating this knowledge to assist policy-makers to achieve greater health impact..
European and global society is now largely physically inactive. The health, economic and social benefits of a more active society are enormous.
DE-PASS will illuminate why individuals and/or societies adopt a physically active or inactive lifestyle. To date enormous energy has been invested by researchers in answering this question, however, the knowledge gained and the impact achieved through this investment is fragmented, not readily translatable and progress beyond the state of the art is slow.
DE-PASS will achieve the following:
- Use a settings approach (home, school, work etc.) to bridge the knowledge and translation gap;
- enact a multi-disciplinary, Pan-European, international network of established, young and Early Career Investigators (ECIs) and policymakers;
- exploit, consolidate and further integrate existing relevant expertise, evidence, resources and influence;
- develop capacities and careers for ECIs;
- provide a new European PABs conceptual framework, a best evidence statement and implementation guidelines for policy-makers;
- define and standardise European measurement protocols;
- establish a new, high functioning, open access European database of determinants of PABs with a cohort extension and
- define an evidenced-based and aspirational Pan-European research harmonisation and implementation strategy.
The Challenge for DE-PASS
- Establish a network of multidisciplinary stakeholders (scientists and policy-makers) who will identify, effectively measure and further understand setting specific factors which promote, maintain or inhibit lifespan physical activity behaviours.
- Subsequently; translate this knowledge into user friendly outputs which assist policy makers and practitioners to achieve more effective health promoting settings and thus to achieve greater health impact.
- Achieve network permanence and sustainability so that the cycle of new knowledge acquisition and translation into policy and practice continues long into the future.
Main Information
01
Background
DE-PASS will focus on identifying, understanding and measuring the determinants which promote, maintain or inhibit Physical Activity Behaviours (PABs) across the lifespan and in different settings and translating this knowledge to assist policy-makers to achieve greater health impact.
02
Aim & Objectives
The aim is to establish a unique and sustainable network of multidisciplinary stakeholders to facilitate and guide the identification and greater understanding of determinants of life course PABs and to translate this knowledge into user friendly outputs which assist policy makers and practitioners to achieve more effective health promoting settings.
03
Structure
Management Committee, and Core Group Board (CG-B). Members of the CG-B undertake leadership roles for (a) Communication, Dissemination and Exploitation (CDE); (b) Capacity, Training and Implementation (CTI); (c) Science, Growth and Sustainability (SGS).
04
Working Groups
Working Groups are aimed to ensure progress beyond the state of the art and encourage novel approaches and methods, DE-PASS has established 4 Working Groups.

Join the Action
Research capacity and excellence is central to the COST policy. The expansion of the DE-PASS Network within participating countries, across Europe and further afield is a planned objective of the Network. The inclusion of additional partners is welcomed and strongly encouraged. Application to join DEPASS and relevant WGs can be made by clicking on the ‘Join Now’ Link. In order to join DE-PASS, you will need to join COST first. DE-PASS will contact you afterwards to indicate which deliverables have capacity for new members.
