As the DEterminants of Physical ActiviteS in Settings Network (DE-PASS) has drawn to a close, I am filled with pride and gratitude reflecting on the journey we’ve shared over the past four years. What began in November 2020 as a vision to unite multidisciplinary stakeholders to better understand the determinants of physical activity behaviours (PABs) across the lifespan has exceeded expectations in both scope and impact.

DE-PASS brought together 43 nations and over 240 members to address the critical question: What setting-specific factors promote, maintain, or inhibit physical activity? Through the dedication of our Work Groups (WG), we have not only advanced knowledge in this area but also laid the foundation for future research, policy, and practice.

A Vision Translated into Action

From the outset, our objectives were ambitious: to develop new frameworks, measurement toolkits, and harmonized data collection methods while building a vibrant, multidisciplinary, and international research network. I am delighted to say these goals were not only achieved but were complemented by additional successes that emerged from the enthusiasm and creativity of our members.

Some highlights include:

  • The development of the European Physical Activity Determinants (EN-PAD) Framework, which prioritizes key individual and environmental determinants of PABs.
  • The creation of a PAB Determinants Measurement Toolkit, now accessible in multiple languages.
  • A successful pilot of harmonized data collection involving over 400 families across 10 nations.
  • Securing a €2.75m MSCA Doctoral Network to carry forward the DE-PASS legacy, providing training for 10 PhD students.

In addition to intellectual outputs—including consensus statements, high-impact publications, and a robust training program—DE-PASS fostered the growth of young researchers and innovators. With over 250 participants engaging in training schools, short-term scientific missions, and virtual mobility grants, we have strengthened the pipeline of talent essential to the field’s future.

A Celebratory Conclusion

Our final event in Olomouc, hosted by the Faculty of Physical Culture at Palacký University, served as a fitting culmination of these achievements. Over three days, we reflected on the milestones reached, discussed the challenges ahead, and celebrated the spirit of collaboration that has defined DE-PASS.

It was particularly inspiring to hear from our young researchers, whose contributions have enriched the network. Their energy and insights underscore the importance of sustaining the momentum we have built.

Looking to the Future: The DE-PASS Legacy

As we transition into the legacy phase of DE-PASS, our focus shifts to how we can leverage the network and its outputs to secure additional funding and influence policy. By May 2025, we aim to articulate a European research, harmonization, and implementation strategy that is both evidence-based and aspirational. This will include engaging with policymakers to ensure that our findings translate into tangible benefits for populations across Europe.

A Final Note of Thanks

The success of DE-PASS is a testament to the dedication, expertise, and collaboration of its members. I extend my gratitude to everyone who contributed to this remarkable journey—whether by leading work groups, contributing to intellectual outputs, or supporting the network’s vision.

As Chair, I am privileged to have worked alongside such a talented and committed group of individuals. Together, we have created a foundation that will continue to advance the understanding of physical activity behaviours for years to come.

Here’s to the future of DE-PASS—its legacy, its impact, and the possibilities yet to be realised.
