DE-PASS Publication: Determinants of physical activities in settings (DE-PASS): Approach for selecting the core measures for determinants of physical activity behaviours in 9-12 old children
Balancing the use of appropriate measures for data collection with minimising participant burden is a common challenge in large transdisciplinary research teams. This paper outlines the process used to select key determinants of physical activity behaviors in children aged 9–12 years. The process involved collaboration between a small internal team (n=8) and a larger group of external experts and stakeholders (n=30-50) across three steps:
- External Input: Experts provided initial opinions to identify potential measures.
- Internal Input: The small team systematically scored, sorted, and selected measures based on evidence-building practices, including systematic literature reviews, peer-review, and consensus discussions.
- External Validation: The selected measures were validated by the larger group of experts.
From an initial list of 113 measures, 18 were selected and included in a core toolkit comprising child and caregiver questionnaires. Key factors in the process included pragmatism, ease of implementation, and the collective experience of the experts. This approach provides a useful reference for other researchers facing similar challenges in measure selection.
