DE-PASS Best Evidence Statement (BESt): Determinants of self-report physical activity and sedentary behaviours in children in settings: A systematic review and meta-analyses

Previous programs designed to improve children’s physical activity (PA) and reduce sedentary behavior (SB) often focus on changing factors (determinants) believed to influence these behaviors. However, it’s unclear how these factors relate to PA and SB in different environments (like schools or families). This study reviewed earlier interventions to identify which modifiable factors were targeted, assess how interventions affected these factors, and examine their link to self-reported PA and SB in various settings.

The researchers searched databases for studies published up to July 2023, focusing on randomized and non-randomized trials that addressed changeable factors. Data was analyzed using advanced statistical methods to assess intervention effectiveness, variability in results, and the strength of evidence.

Out of the reviewed studies, 15 were eligible. These studies identified 37 unique factors across four settings: schools, families, school-family combinations, and communities. Most factors were related to individual or interpersonal influences. Changes were seen in areas like children’s perceptions of teachers, self-management, external motivation, and parental behavior, but these didn’t result in significant changes in PA or SB. Similarly, statistical analysis of factors like self-efficacy, attitude, and parental practices showed little to no effect on PA or SB.

The study concluded there’s no clear evidence linking these factors to changes in children’s PA or SB, likely because the interventions themselves weren’t effective. Future interventions should adopt a systems-based approach, focusing on factors specific to the context of each setting, and include broader influences like policies and environmental factors.
